A previously fired Mississippi police officer who was filmed verbally harassing a group of Hispanic men with racist remarks has been welcomed aboard by another police department just days after President Donald Trump's inauguration.
Jeremy Rast, formerly of the Richland Police Department, was dismissed last year after being caught on video telling a group of Hispanic men to "go back to Mexico" and to "get the f*** out of Richland," as reported by WLBT.
Following the video's release, Rast admitted to local media that his comments were "inappropriate and unprofessional," and Richland Police Chief Adrian Ready condemned his actions, stating that such language "undermines the trust and respect" the department strives to build with the community.
Despite his controversial dismissal, Rast has been hired by the Peal Police Department, which announced the appointment on social media Thursday. "We're excited to have him join the team and look forward to the great work he will bring to our community. Welcome aboard!!!" the department said on Facebook.
The timing of Rast's hiring coincides with Trump's first week in office, during which his administration has acted on its hardline stance against diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and immigration with a flurry of executive orders.
