UPDATE: Miss USA 2014 Winner Nia Sanchez: 5 Things To Know About The Latina Beauty Queen From Nevada
Beauty pageants are popular among Latino viewers and tonight the Miss USA 2014 competition promises to sizzle. The bayou will heat up tonight as it has the most beautiful women in the country, representing each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, competing and being judged in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and interview. Baton Rogue, Louisiana will be the epicenter of beauty as NBC telecasts the ceremony starting at 8pm ET/PT with musical guests Florida Georgia Line and special guest Nelly, Marc Broussardand The Dirty Dozen Brass Bands. Tonight's event will particularly appeal to Hispanic viewers as we will be represented onscreen, not just by the ladies vying for the crown, but by the judging panel and a special musical guest. These are the Top 9 Reasons Latinos Should Watch Miss USA 2014:
1. Camila Performing: The Mexican pop band was confirmed to be part of the musical lineup following their release of new album "Elypse." This will mark the groups first public performance since the launch of their record. Mario Domm and Pablo Hurtado will be joined by the ladies on stage as they sing their new hit single "Decidiste Dejarme." The Miss USA pageant will be the first time the duo performs in an English speaking network. 2. Bárbara Palacios Judging: Beauty queen Palacios will be part of the judges panel on this evening. The woman knows a thing or two about this competition as she was crowned Miss Universe in 1986, winning the title for Venezuela for a third time. Palacios is also one of the judges confirmed for Telemundo's "Miss Latina Universo," that will have Latinas across the U.S. competing for the ultimate prize of a spot in the Miss Universe pageant. 3. Twitter Vote: The viewing public will have a say during the evening gown competition. People that have an active account on Twitter can cast their vote for their favorite and we can make a difference to one of the Latina's competing.
4. Kendall Bautista (Miss Alaska): Kendall started the first Alaska chapter of the "Queen for a Day" Foundation. She is the Director, providing therapeutic experiences to children with chronic illnesses in the hospital by spending a day dressing them up like princesses and having a tea party filled with joy and laughter. She also serves as a mentor for the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization and visits with her "little sister" each week. She joined the program after her family fostered a five-year-old girl who inspired her to continue to be a big sister in the life of other young girls. She enjoys working with many charitable causes. She continues to make a positive impact on her community while working to obtain her degree in Journalism and Marketing from the University of Alaska, Anchorage. She plans to have a career in public relations and broadcast journalism, and become a best-selling author.
5. Desirée Pérez(Miss Conneticut): Desiree is a Venezuelan native who moved to the United States at the age of 9 due to medical reasons. She was diagnosed with a rare tumor that developed in her jaw at the age of 7 and was quickly removed by a bone transplant. As a result, she hopes to use her title to advocate for children that have been exposed to cancer. This situation has allowed her to understand the importance of encouraging others through her story. In her free time, Desiree loves to spend quality time with her friends and family, attend comedy shows, cook, and paddle board. Desiree was raised in a business household, which helped her developed a business mindset. She has built an Amway business by being an Independent Business Owner. She hopes to create a legacy for her family.Desiree believes in the art of Free Enterprise and hopes to help as many people as possible do the same.
6. Amanda Soltero (Miss Nebraska): Amanda is a recent broadcast graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She supports the fight against childhood cancer and is actively involved with a non-profit organization called "Sammy's Superheroes." Amanda grew up in a small town with one younger sister. Her faith and family are the most important parts of her life. She is an animal lover and enjoys spending time with her puppy, Reese. Her dream job is to do reporting on entertainment news for a large market.
7. Nia Sánchez (Miss Nevada): Nia is 24 years old, born and raised in Sacramento until age 7. From there, her love of travel began, moving between California and Washington. After high school, she moved to Europe to be a nanny. Nia then traveled to the Middle East, Austria and Switzerland. Nia is half Hispanic, which is why she loved having the opportunity to travel to Mexico while on mission trips. In 2009, she saw a close friend take the title of Miss USA and decided to get into pageantry. She has competed both domestically and internationally with great success. Nia has worked as a full time model for the past 7 years and was chosen out of thousands of applicants to be a face character for Hong Kong Disney. After visiting Thailand and the Great Wall Of China, Nia made the bright lights of Las Vegas her home. She is currently modeling full time and enjoying her reign as Miss Nevada USA 2014!
8. Olivia Olvera (Miss North Carolina): Olivia Olvera, 26, is the Spokesperson for the Helping A Hero Organization. Olivia is from Fayetteville, North Carolina where she graduated from South View High School. She then attended Methodist University for one year before transferring to the University of South Carolina at Columbia where she studied Political Science. Olivia worked through college for the SC Vocational Rehabilitation Center as an Aquatic Instructor and PT Aid. Olivia began competing in pageants competitively when she moved to South Carolina for school. The first time competing at the state level, Olivia did not break the top 15. She continued three more times in South Carolina placing 3rd Runner-up twice and 1st Runner-up once. Olivia enjoys being with family and friends, traveling, and fishing with her dad. She plans to open more doors during her year as Miss North Carolina USA and hopes to impact the lives of young girls who need a little extra love and inspiration in finding their personal self-worth.
9. Lauren Guzmán(Miss Texas): Lauren Guzman is the fifth Texas titleholder to win both Miss Texas Teen USA and Miss Texas USA. She is a graduate of St. Mary's University in San Antonio, where she received her degree in Forensic Science. She plans on pursuing a career as a special agent with the FBI. Lauren is also an active member of the Texas State Guard Rapid Reaction Force (RRF). The Texas State Guard is a volunteer militia that is deployed in the event of a natural disaster to supplement local and state law enforcement. RRF is trained in land navigation, search and rescue, swift water rescue, and shelter management. Lauren volunteers with several organizations including Pink To Do, Bethany House of Laredo, USO, Shriner's Hospital, Military Mom's and Wives of Brazoria County, MHMR(Mental Health Mental Retardation)and Walk MS, to name a few. In her spare time, she likes to be outdoors swimming, hunting, fishing, or snow-skiing.
