The judges have spoken. Megan Young, the 23-year-old Miss Philippines, was crowned Miss World this Saturday before a crowd in the tightly-secured Indonesian island of Bali. "I promise to be the best Miss World ever," Young, an actress, said to an audience filled with many of her adoring fans who traveled from the Philippines to attend the event. Young is U.S.-born, but moved to the Philippines when she was 10, where she began appearing in films and was a television host. She is the successor of the 2012 winner, Wenxia Yu of China. There were a total of 127 contestants vying for the crown in the 63rd annual event. Marine Lorphelin, the 20-year-old from France, was the second place winner while Carranzar Naa Okailey Shooter, 22-year-old Miss Ghana, came in third.
The show was disrupted by protests from Muslim groups, demanding the show be canceled as it revealed too much skin and went against traditional Islamic values. Organizers of the contest made amendments to the competition, replacing the bikini portion with sarongs. The concessions proved to be insufficient as the groups eventually began protesting for the shutdown of the entire contest. The groups vowed to interrupt Saturday's show, but authorities said no protests were plan and the show continued without issue. The Indonesian government announced three weeks prior to the competition that it would be moved from the capital Jakarta to the Hindu-dominated island of Bali apparently in response to the backlash.
