Mexico’s best soccer player is adding a new title to his list of accolades: father. Miguel Layún and his wife announced via Twitter over the weekend that they are expecting their first child together. The Club America star has been married to Ana Laura Galvan for over two years and posted a picture of the ultrasound on his Twitter account.
In another photo he posted on his Twitter account, Layún is holding a Coca Cola can with the word “Papa” on it. In the twitter post, Layún writes a message to his wife:
“Thank you @AnaLaugaIvan for giving me the greatest joy in the world! #TeAmooo,” he wrote in Spanish.
Layún and Galvan were married in June of 2012 in Tampico, Mexico and have been inseparable ever since. Three years ago, Layún became the fall boy for the Mexican National Team in which the hashtag, #TodoesculpadeLayun (Everything is Layún’s fault) became a trending topic throughout Mexico. The two years that followed were some of the worst of Layún’s life and he has repeatedly credited his wife for helping him get through it.
Galvan gave multiple television interviews over the past couple years stating that her and Layún could not go out in public and they repeatedly avoided restaurants and shopping malls because of the abuse her husband would receive. In one such interview shortly after they were married, Galvan said she would not wear her husband’s jersey inside Club America’s Estadio Azteca for fear of harassment.
Layún has since overcome that dark period in his life and has grown to become one of Mexico’s best soccer players in the world, and certainly its best defender. The Twitter post announcing the birth of his first child is below.
