Miguel Cotto is one of the most decorated boxers of all-time and while the 32-year-old has the fast track to an enshrinement in the International Boxing Hall of Fame down the road, the Caguas, Puerto Rico native has been in a bit of a rut the last few years. Struggling to find the dominant rhythm that helped him claim three world titles in three different weight classes, Cotto has dropped his last two bouts. Defeated by Floyd Mayweather Junior in May 2012 and Austin Trout seven months later, the future Hall of Famer hasn't landed in the victory circle since taking down Antonio Margarito in December of 2011, a long stretch between wins for someone highly regarded in the boxing world.
Set to take on Delvin Rodriguez (28-6-3, 16 KO) in his next bout, the 32-year-old says he feels great once again and credits his rejuvinated spirit to new trainer Freddie Roche since Roche has instilled the confidence Cotto needs to make one final title run. "I work in the most peaceful and comfortable camp and that's the way I will be in the fight," Cotto said. "I trust in my conditioning. I trust everything I do in the camp and I am ready. Freddie took the best from me and the best from him, that's what we did in training camp. I need a person who can see what I can't do inside the ring, people who can tell what I have to do in the most correct way. That was Freddie."
Rodriguez, a 33-year-old native of the Dominican Republic, will certainly pose a challenge to Cotto since he owns a size advantage and holds a powerful combination style of fighting. Fully aware that he can solidify his career with a keynote victory over one of the best fighters in the history of the sport, Rodriguez is happy for the opportunity and believes that he can take down the former champion.
"I'm just enjoying every second of this because this is an opportunity that I earned. I got to this opportunity the hard way," he said. "After so many years of hard work, one bad decision after the other, tough fights, I'm just thankful to God that I'm here. This is my time, my turn to win. I have enjoyed every second of this promotion. Every fighter has a defining moment in his career. For me, my career takes a big turn for greatness on Saturday night, I will beat Cotto."
