Miguel Cotto picked the wrong night to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Dodger Stadium.
The Puerto Rican boxing champion was asked to take the mound ahead of the Dodgers Oct. 3 game against the San Diego Padres. Unfortunately for Cotto, it was also the Dodgers 18th Annual La Gran Fiesta celebrating Hispanic Heritage day. Needless to say, there were many Mexican fans in attendance and they weren't too kind to Cotto when he was announced on the big screen.
Cotto is set to step into the ring on November 21st against Mexican boxer, Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight is sure to draw record Pay Per View numbers as fight fans have been waiting for this matchup for years.
Cotto is undefeated since switching trainers to Freddie Roach, and is a slight underdog against Alvarez. The middleweight champion is currently training at the famed Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, CA, which is owned by Roach.
"I am more than ready to get to work and am fully confident that the plan Freddie Roach has in place for our team is going to ensure that I am prepared to lock in this victory on November 21," he told Latin Times from the field at Dodger Stadium.
Despite the boos from the Los Angeles crowd, Cotto was all smiles before the game as he took photos with Dodgers legend Tommy Lasorda and posed with fellow Puerto Rican and player Kiké Hernandez.
Cotto vs. Canelo is a 12-round bout that will air love on HBO PPV for Cotto's WBC and Ring Magazine Middleweight Title belts. The fight will take place at 9:00PM EST, with the main event scheduled for 11:30PM EST from the Mandalay Bay Casino.
