A Michigan newspaper has issued a correction on an article after former President Donald Trump pulled out a print edition of the paper at a speech to claim that he was Michigan's 2013 "Man of The Year".
Trump's claim took place during remarks delivered at a meeting of the Detroit Economic Club at the Motor City Casino. In a passage of his speech, he pulled out a printed article from The Oakland Press and spoke about how he asked his team to find proof that he received the award.
"And guess what? They found it," Trump stated. "It says, 'Oakland County GOP to honor Donald Trump, former president, to speak at upcoming Lincoln Day fundraising dinner.' And it says down here, 'The county party gave Trump the man of the year award at the dinner, too.'"
The newspaper issued a correction on Thursday, highlighting that Trump was not honored with the award he claimed to have received.
"A reference in the 2023 story, headlined 'Oakland County GOP to honor Donald Trump,' about the 2013 award was incorrect," reads the correction. "Trump was the keynote speaker at the 2013 dinner in Novi, which drew a record crowd. He was not honored as Man of the Year."
"During the 2023 dinner, Trump was honored as the Man of the Decade which was reported in the 2023 story," the correction continued. "We're setting the record straight after the former president incorrectly cited the 2013 Man of the Year award during a recent speech to the Detroit Economic Club. The Oakland Press strives for accuracy and fairness and will correct inaccuracies or clarify confusing information," the statement adds.
Trump has referred to the award he never received at least 20 times since his election in 2016, according to the Washington Post.
