Former first lady Michelle Obama is absent at Jimmy Carter's funeral in Washington D.C. on Thursday. While neither she or her office provided a public statement on her absence, CNN reported that she had "scheduling conflicts" and was remaining in Hawaii.

"I'm told by her advisors that she has scheduling conflicts," said CNN reported Jeff Zeleney, as quoted by the Daily Mail. Her husband, former President Barack Obama, attended the service on his own. He was seen having a lengthy and amicable conversation with President-elect Donald Trump before it began.

Trump also generated headlines by shaking hands with his former vice president, Mike Pence, despite both criticizing each other since their fallout stemming from Pence's refusal to play a role in overturning the 2020 presidential election on January 6, 2021.

The members of the Republican presidential ticket gathered along with other former U.S. heads of state and vice presidents for the state funeral taking place in Washington D.C. Pence also shook hands with Melania Trump, but Donald Trump and Karen Pence didn't.
