Sadly this isn't just a case of extreme method acting; Michael Douglas' son was recently at the losing end of a brutal beating in a Pennsylvania prison, winding up with a broken leg and finger, the Daily Mail reports.

The son of Oscar-winning Hollywood actor Michael Douglas, Cameron Douglas had been serving his nine year plus sentence for dealing crystal meth and smuggling in drugs for himself to prison when he suffered the injuries, which included a broken femur, according to the New York Post. A New York City mob boss reportedly put a $100 bounty on his head for anyone who hurt the celebrity progeny during flag-football season this fall.

Douglas apparently heard of the crime scheme and dropped out of the league, but that didn't stop him from ending up in the hospital. He reportedly blamed the injuries on a handball game, said a source to the Post.

"He broke his femur, which is hard to snap, and had to have a rod inserted," said an anonymous source to the Post. "He told health services staff that he hurt them playing handball. You don't break a femur playing handball."

Douglas was a wanted man for being a "rat," an anonymous inside source said to the Post. His psychiatrist Dr. Robert Millman accidentally exposed his identity as an informant during a bail hearing in 2010, divulging that Douglas agreed to testify against his prison drug suppliers, Mexican immigrant brothers David and Eduardo Escalera.

According to the Post, who spoke to an inside source at the prison, Douglas' broken leg was initially misdiagnosed as a sprain and a blood clot developed.

"She thought it was a sprain, so he wants to sue this woman. He's still walking around on crutches two months later."

Douglas was sentenced to five years in prison in 2010 after pleading guilty to charges of distributing crystal meth and possessing heroin. Authorities tacked on an additional 4½-year term last December when it was discovered drugs were being smuggled into the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York on his behalf. Douglas is serving his time in Loretto, Pa., but was in New York to testify against a former supplier, reported the Los Angeles Times.

Douglas' 4½-year sentence is reportedly among the most serious judgments dealt for drug possession by a federal prisoner, according to the New York Times. Most prisoners found in possession of drugs are not charged, but rather face administrative sanctions such as loss of prison privileges, the Times reported.

Speaking publicly about his son in 2010, Cameron's father, Michael Douglas, said he believed prison would do him some good and might even be a "blessing in disguise." The elder Douglas took full responsibility for his son's unstable upbringing and assumed blame for "being a bad father," but added that without prison intervention, Cameron "was going to be dead or somebody was gonna kill him. I think he has a chance to start a new life, and he knows that."

According to the Daily Mail, Cameron Douglas has been working as a weekend orderly in a housing unit earning $1.65 per month. The famous actor's son is not eligible for parole until 2018.
