UPDATE: Mexico has now won 17 gold medals, 19 silver and 11 bronze, bringing its total to 47.

As the Central American and Caribbean Athletic Championships come to a close, Mexico emerges most victorious. The Mexican athletic teams won seven gold medals this weekend, setting their total at 14. The teams walk away with 12 silver and seven bronze as well, putting them in the No. 1 spot with 33 medals in all after competing for 94 titles, CNN Mexico reported.

The wins for Mexico concluded with the superior showing of Jorge Martínez and Guadalupe González; Martinez ran a 1:27:17 in the 20-kilometer and Gonzalez ran 47:48:25 in the 10-kilometer. In Saturday's morning rounds, Olympic finalist of the 5,000-meter run, Juan Luis Barrios, clocked in at 14:08:19 minutes. Kathia García, competing in the 10,000 meters, registered a time of 35:19:92 minutes, with Azucena Ríos winning the 3,000-meter hurdles with a time of 10:56:55 minutes.

Costa Rica and Jamaica proved to be fierce combatants, but during the morning competitions, Costa Rica experienced some setbacks. Nery Brenes, 400-meter world champion, finished fourth with 46.22 seconds. He conceded that he was not in top form for the competition. Another Costa Rican, however, Roberto Sawyers, broke the disappointment by besting Mexican Diego Del Real in the hammer throw with 68.92 meters, as opposed to Del Real's 65.35 meters.

Jamaica won three golds Saturday, with Monique Morgan clocking in at 13.25 seconds in the 100 meters, Allison Randall with 55.36 meters in the discus throw and the 4 by 100 women's quatrain with 43.58 minutes.
