El Tri's World Cup hopes have been dashed after a 2-1 defeat to the Netherlands in the last six minutes of play. Mexico was a few minutes away from making history and reaching their first encounter at the quarter finals since 1986 but lost 2-1 to a Holland who scored in the 88th minute and left the Tricolor out of the cup. The Tricolor let go of a great opportunity to reach the quarterfinals and fell cruelly to the Orange selection.

Now, Holland will play on Saturday, July 5, against the winner of today's meeting between Greece and Costa Rica at Arena Pernambuco in Recife. At 88 minutes, when Mexico was ahead with a goal from Giovani Dos Santos an oversight in the left corner left Wesley Sneijder solo, who tied the game. At the 90th minute, Arjen Robben, who had done little during the meeting, eluded two defenders and then Rafael Márquez and toppled the Dutch player. Pedro Proenca ordered the deadly penalty.

It was the sixth time that Mexico exits in the second round but it is considered to be one of the most painful. The Aztecs seemed to have control of the game until the first half hour of the match when they gave the ball away to Holland repeatedly and the Dutch began an onslaught that was broken only by Dos Santos goal. Notwithstanding, Mexicans on social media have taken the loss as a source of inspiration for some tragic and hilarious memes, Tweets and vines.
