Mexico couldn't muster a single goal on Friday as Miguel Herrera's "B Team" recorded a scoreless draw 0-0 in Sausalito in their opening match of the 2015 Copa America tournament.
El Tri dominated possession and had more shots in the match, but couldn't break through the staunch Bolivian defense that was stingy and stubborn with Mexico all match.
Many Mexican fans will take solace in the fact that their second unit was able to take away point from the game, but this was a match that despite the lack of talent on the roster, El Tri needed to win. Bolivia is easily the weakest team in Group A, which also features host nation Chile and Ecuador.
Additionally, Bolivia has only one win in their last 16 international matches, and has never won a Copa America game in their country's history. They went into the match as a one-goal underdog and Mexico struggled throughout the game and squandered an excellent opportunity to take away three points.
Raul Jimenez, who came into the match as a second half substitute had El Tri's best chance to score in the second half when his header just missed finding the back of the net.
Bolivia nearly jumped out to an early lead when forward Marcelo Moreno struck the post in the 15th minute. Ricardo Pedriel sent a cross to the near post that Moreno nearly put away if not for the woodwork.
The one bright spot for Mexico was goalkeeper Jesus de Jesus Corona who once again shined in net for El Tri. Corona punched a way a shot by Bolivia's Jhasmani Campos from 25-yards away.
Mexico may have lost 36-year-old captain Rafa Marquez who left the match early in the second half with an apparent leg injury. Things won't get better for Mexico when they take on hosts Chile on June 15th.
