Mexico's controversial new telecommunications bill has generated quite the firestorm in Mexican social media through both physical and online protests using the hashtag #EPNvsInternet. However, the bill isn't having an easy time in the Senate either: Senators in the PRD, PT and the PAN have today rejected the opinion document drafted by Javier Lozano Alarcón, president of the Senate's Commission of Communication and Transport.
In a meeting that lasted nearly three hours, members of the commssions for Radio, Television and Cinematography rejected the project proposal drafted by Lozano, determining that it was elaborated in a biased, personal manner and without the necessary consent of the aforementioned commissions. The Senate was called to recess at 5PM today so that a new project proposal could be drafted which would include proposal from the 22 PRD senators.
The PRD Senators Dolores Padierna and Miguel Barbosa Huerta Manuel Bartlett from the Worker's Party (PT) as well as Javier Corral Jurado from the National Action Party (PAN) accused Lozano of having a conflict of interests with the telecommunications sector as well as participating in the initiation of the law by the President, an accusation Javier Lozano rejects. Meanwhile protesters took to the streets of Mexico City today to march against the law.
