For most of Friday night's under-17 quarterfinals match between Mexico and Brazil, neither team could put the ball in the back of the net. When they did, it came in flurries: in the 80th minute, Mexico's Ivan Ochoa knocked in a free kick from the right side from near the back post to make it 1-0, and Brazil's Nathan responded shortly afterward, firing in his own deflected shot in the Mexican penalty area to even things up with five minutes left. El Tri goalie Raúl Gudiño came out as the hero in the shootout, managing to put the kibosh on shots from Brazil's Gabriel and Mosquito. Alejandro Díaz got much of the glory, firing in the kick that gave the green shirts the victory. He almost didn't get a chance at doing it, though. The game was an extraordinarily hard-fought one for all 90 minutes, with no real push into enemy territory achieved by either team - both of which are known for their striking prowess -- for about the first 37 minutes, until Ochoa suddenly took up the ball on his own half and proceeded to dash half the length of the pitch, leveling a shot on goal which Marcos blocked with his knee. A minute before the halftime whistle blew, Brazil's Indio tried a free-kick from far out which hit the crossbar, and Caio followed that up only seconds later with a shot from the edge of the box which flew too high. The second half was mostly the same story, with neither side able to push deep enough into their opponents' half of the pitch to get off a good shot on goal until the 80th minute, when Ochoa sent Brazil into desperation mode with his goal.
Gudiño managed to get his hands on both of Brazil's first two shots, but he couldn't keep them out of the goal. Both sides went on netting the kicks until captain Ulises Rivas's effort was blocked by Brazil's Marcos, and Gudiño responded with a save of Gabriel. The deadlock was finally broken when Gudiño saved Mosquito's second kick and Alejandro Diaz managed to knock his in. In advancing to the Under-17 World Cup semifinals, which are held this year in the United Arab Emirates, Mexico will now face the winner of the match between Ivory Coast and Argentina.
