Almost 200 people were attending mass on Sunday at Santa Clara Catholic Church in Mexico when the building suddenly collapsed. The church was located near the northern Mexico city of Monterrey. The building was undergoing construction but worshippers still came to the church, protected from the rain by tarps. The covers had been tied to the walls of Santa Clara creating a less than sturdy roof. Reports are saying that the weight of the rain pulled the tarps down, causing the walls to collapse.

Over 20 people inside the church were injured as a result of the collapse. The wounded were rushed to hospitals the seriousness of their injuries are still being determined. A 10-year-old boy was seriously injured in the collapse and died on his way to the hospital. Jesus Fernandez, the secretary of the Juarez Council spoke to Reuters about the church collapse saying, "It's a tragedy, an accident caused by the large amounts of rain."

For two weeks Mexico has been beaten and battered with heavy rains causing mudslides and massive flooding. The latest death toll from the tropical storms Manuel and Ingrid stands at 110. There are at least 68 people still missing following a landslide that took out the village of La Pintada. Out of the 31 states in Mexico 24 of them have been damaged by the dual storms. More rain is expected to fall in the Mexican northeast on Monday.
