Mexico is preparing an interagency plan in response to potential mass deportation of Mexican nationals from the United States, should the policy proposals of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump come to fruition after his inauguration on January 20, 2025, according to Secretary of Foreign Affairs Juan Ramón de la Fuente.
De la Fuente announced the initiative following a meeting with President Claudia Sheinbaum and other senior officials at the National Palace. He said the plan will have one main goal in mind: the welfare of Mexican nationals:
"We are working to consider all possible scenarios, and there is an interagency plan that the president will announce at the appropriate time. The responsibility and obligation of the Mexican state is, obviously, to the Mexican people. Therefore, they represent the priority"
While details of the plan remain undisclosed, other attendees at the meeting included authorities from the ministries of Defense, Welfare, and Urban Development, as well as the National Migration Institute. "We are working to consider all possible scenarios, and there is an interagency plan that the president will announce at the appropriate time," said De la Fuente as reported by local news outlet El Financiero.
De la Fuente's comments align with those made by Sheinbaum on Tuesday, when she said that "should there be mass deportations, we are also preparing to welcome all Mexican men and women who, for any reason, are deported from the United States."
President Sheinbaum has also expressed her intention to maintain dialogue with the incoming U.S. administration while also emphasizing the importance of bilateral cooperation and respect for Mexican sovereignty. "Mexico is a free, independent, sovereign country – and that is above everything else," she said when asked about a report that revealed Trump would involve sending special forces across the border to take on powerful cartels.
