Sent by the Mexican government to improve the security situation in the border town of Matamoros, 13 Federal troops are accused of kidnapping a citizen for randsom. According to the AP, 14 soldiers were detained for alleged involvement in the kidnapping of a rich construction company owner. The soldiers were arrested by army and marine units in a sting connected to the handoff of the owner’s $2 million ransom.
One of the soldiers has been released, according to Terra. The remaining 13 Federales will likely be charged with kidnapping and extortion.

The Zetas cartel was founded by dozens of military soldiers who worked against the law after fighting for it.
