Enrique Peña Nieto’s presidency in Mexico has been filled controversy. His latest issue is seemingly childish, however the controversial toy has a big impact. A new “Barbie” doll has hit the shelves in Mexico and it bears a striking resemblance to the embattled country’s First Lady, Angélica Rivera. As if the Angélica Rivera doll wasn’t enough, the packaging of the new toy completes the intended insult with the box reading “Soy La Dueña.” The phrase means, “I’m The Owner” which alludes to the popular Mexican telenovela that starred the First Lady during the 1990’s, when Rivera was in the midst of her acting days.
No doll is complete with out accessories, and the Angélica Rivera is certainly not lacking in that department. In addition to donning a tight, blue mini dress, the doll comes with lots of cash and a miniature Time magazine, complete with the headline “Salvando al Marido” which translates to “Saving My Husband.” Interestingly enough, there is one major accessory of Rivera’s that is missing. The doll’s box notes that this Angélica Rivera does not “include the White House.” Despite the similar name, the house is not the same one inhabited by President Obama and the first family of the United States. Instead the White House is the name given to the controversial stark white, $7 million mansion that Rivera and Nieto built using government contracts, only inciting the tales of corruption within Mexico.
According to Fusion the Angélica Rivera doll first came to light in a Youtube video posted by user “Los Tejemedios.” The channel has become notable for posting videos of protests in Mexico, and leftist messages rallying against Peña Nieto’s presidency. In addition to posting a video of the doll, the user claims that the “Barbie” doll is being sold at multiple street markets in the Mexican capital. However, news reports state that it is more likely that there are only a few of the Angélica Rivera dolls floating around. It is more likely a prototype with the intention of stirring up conversations in an attempt to create a campaign of mocking toys that raise political awareness.
