El Chapo’s model wife Emma Coronel Aispuro is set to appear in a Washington DC court on Sept. 15 to receive her sentence, however her court date seems to have been mysteriously delayed. Coronel Aispuro is expected to face a possible 10 years life sentence for her role in her husband’s drug empire.
According to ABC News, she was due to be sentenced on Wednesday, but her court date was just pushed back for a month. Newly filed court documents only stated a vague reason for the delay citing other obligations that have risen in the interim and nature of the case. “The parties believe that additional time is necessary to adequately prepare for sentencing,” court records stated.
Media analysts and observers have chimed in their speculations with some saying that Coronel Aispuro is cutting a deal to reduce time from her sentence. Her attorney, Jeffrey Lichtman on the other hand, said they are working on financial matters and that the delay is a normal occurrence in about 95% of federal sentences. He strongly suggested that a deal to testify against the notorious Sinaloa Cartel is a fabrication.
The said financial issues that may have caused the delay were not disclosed by Lichtman but El Chapo's wife is indeed subject to fines racking up to $10 million.
A spokesperson from the US Department of Justice declined to comment on the sentencing delay and did not provide any details on the nature of discussions between her attorneys.
The 31-year-old US born former beauty queen had already pleaded guilty in June to charges related to international drug trafficking, money laundering and criminal violation of the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act.
A federal district court judge will determine her final sentence based on the US Sentencing Guidelines. The investigation was conducted by the FBI’s Washington Field Office together with the Drug Enforcement Administration and Homeland Security Investigations.
Coronel Aispuro's hearing comes after several recent court cases that have exposed the roles of glamorous women in Latin American drug cartels. Just days after her first court appearance two months ago, a number of beautiful and prominent women have been sentenced in connection to crimes involving drugs and organized crime.
Jessica Oseguera, daughter of El Chapo’s cartel rival Nemesio Oseguera Cervanties was handed a sentence of two and a half years in jail for helping her father and his cartel launder money.
In August, a Chicago court sentenced Guadalupe Fernandez Valencia to 10 years in prison for playing the right hand of El Chapo’s son. July saw the sentencing of Luz Irene Fajardo Campos to 22 years behind bars for sourcing and trafficking cocaine between Colombia, Mexico and the US.
