Hold on to your hats everyone, there may be a fifth Beatle coming to Liverpool. According to reports from England, Mexican goalkeeper Memo Ochoa who dazzled in net for El Tri during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil is headed to Liverpool during the January transfer window.
Memo has been linked to a lot of teams since he lost favor with his current club Malaga. The list includes other LA Liga squads, Turkish Club Trabzonspor, Brazilian club Santos, and numerous teams in the English Premier League, but it appears that the Reds have emerged as the frontrunner in the “Fortress of Fortaleza” sweepstakes.
Ochoa was a free agent this past summer which meant he was free to sign with any club he wanted to. It was no secret that Liverpool was among the many on his list as they were linked to the goalkeeper following the World Cup tournament. However, Memo opted for La Liga club Malaga where he quickly fell out of favor with manager Javi Gracia and has not started a single league match as he plays second fiddle to Cameroonian keeper, Carlos Kameni.
Sparking the speculation that Memo might be headed to Liverpool is the fact that on Wednesday, Ochoa started following Liverpool on Twitter. Who the goalkeeper follows on Twitter might seem to be an innocuous detail, but currently Liverpool is the only club he follows in England (oh, and he also started following the English Premier League on the same day).
The coincidence seems uncanny, especially after current Reds goalkeeper, Simon Mignolet, was dropped by the team following a 3-0 loss at Old Trafford. Brad Jones started in goal for Liverpool on Wednesday and surrendered only a single goal in the team’s 3-1 victory over AFC Bournemouth. Reportedly, Memo would only cost the Reds between $4-$7 million dollars. Nothing can be made official until next month, but barring something unforeseen, move over John, Paul, George and Ringo, Liverpool is getting a new star.
