Melissa McCarthy is considered to be one of the funniest ladies in Hollywood, from her early days as "Gilmore Girls'" Sookie St. James to the smart mouthed Diana in "Identity Thief" Melissa McCarthy knows how to make us laugh.

Most people with the ability to look beyond a person's outward appearance can look at Melissa McCarthy and see a beautiful, funny, brilliant leading lady who is just beginning what looks to be a long comedic career. Not everyone has that ability however.

Back in February film critic Rex Reed was reviewing McCarthy's film "Identity Thief." The review got nationwide attention for Reed's remarks about Melissa McCarthy's weight. Reed referred to McCarthy as "tractor sized," a "female hippo" and "a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success."

Following the "Identity Thief" review Melissa McCarthy kept quiet about her feelings regarding what Rex Reed said about her, until now. In a recent interview with the New York Times Melissa McCarthy spoke about her reaction to Rex Reeds review as well as her life, career and family.

McCarthy told the Times her initial reaction to Rex Reed's comments was to ask "Really?" Melissa McCarthy asked why someone (possibly meaning the editor who reviews Reed's stories before publication) would allow those remarks in the review.

"I felt really bad for someone who is swimming in so much hate. I just thought that's someone who is in a really bad spot and I'm in such a happy spot. I laugh my head off every day with my husband and my kids who are mooning me and singing me songs," McCarthy said to the New York Times.

One bad review is not going to slow down Melissa McCarthy, besides a hugely successful comedy TV show on CBS McCarthy has a new film coming out costarring Sandra Bullock.

"The Heat" stars Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy as mismatched FBI agents working together on a case in an attempt to stop a drug lord.

The IMDB profile for "The Heat" says, "Uptight FBI agent Sara Ashburn [Bullock] is paired with testy Boston cop Shannon Mullins [McCarthy] in order to take down a ruthless drug lord. The hitch: neither woman as ever had a partner-or a friend for that matter."

McCarthy spoke with the NY Times about working with Oscar winner Sandra Bullock. The dynamic on set was one of friendly competition. Both women would try to one up each other on the comedy scale and both quickly learned the other was a worthy opponent.

"She will go for the jugular," Bullock told the New York Times about McCarthy. "And if you're delicate about it you're going to sink. So you fire back - you go for the carotid artery."

"The Heat" hits theaters June 28. Melissa McCarthy will be back on CBS this fall for the fourth season of "Mike and Molly."
