Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, is reportedly pitching her animated series “Pearl” to other streaming sites and networks a week after Netflix announced its cancellation due to financial concerns, as she appears eager to bring the show back to life.
“Pearl” is an animated series that was pitched to be about a 12-year-old girl who finds herself being inspired by influential women in the history of the world. The series was part of a $100 million deal between Netflix and Archewell Productions when it was canceled, according to Marie Claire.
Behind the scenes of the project, Meghan and Prince Harry are reportedly not giving up on the endeavor. Producer David Furnish and Meghan herself have been pitching the series to other streamers and networks like Disney, Amazon, and Apple in an attempt to find a new home for the project, The Overtimer reported.
“Meghan and Harry will not give up on taking 'Pearl' to the screen. They are determined to not let all the work and creative endeavors put into the idea simply fall away,” a source said. “Netflix has a standard deal with them, typical in Hollywood, allowing them to pitch projects rejected by them to other outlets. This is common practice within TV circles in Hollywood.”
It is unclear how much interest there is in the major streaming sites and networks to create the series, but Meghan and Furnish are reportedly holding out hope for a better future for the project after its cancellation.
Meghan's excitement regarding the series was palpable from the start, with a statement from the announcement saying that "[She's] thrilled that Archewell Productions, partnered with the powerhouse platform of Netflix and these incredible producers, will together bring you this new animated series, which celebrates extraordinary women throughout history."
Because of the cancellation of “Pearl,” the only project that Archewell Productions currently has on their website is the docu-series “Heart of Invictus,” which will focus on some of the more inspiring stories of the participants of the Invictus Games, which happened in April at the Netherlands.
Meghan also has a podcast in the works called “Archetypes,” though an official release date for the project has yet to be announced.
