Earlier in October 2019, the royal couple, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry accused British tabloids of misusing private information and a breach of the Data Protection Act 2018 after a letter written by Markle to her father was published in The Daily Mail’s Sunday edition.
Byline Investigates has recently unearthed new court papers which reveal Meghan Markle’s specific claims against the "lie after lie at her expense." As per the reports, Markle has filed a claim against Associated Newspapers (the Daily Mail and the Mail) under which she is accusing the Mail of running a three-year fake news campaign against her.
Specific topics that were brought up were her relationship with her mother, her baby shower, her purchases and renovations for Frogmore Cottage home with Prince Harry, and more.
As per the new court filings, Markle's lawyers have pointed out several articles in The Mail wherein Markle had reportedly "splashed out £5,000” on a copper bathtub and spent £500,000, on soundproofing Frogmore Cottage. Both of these things do “not exist and is completely untrue,” as per the court fillings.
The same goes for the articles which mention the construction of a yoga studio, an orangery, a tennis court, and an entire "guest wing" for Markle's mother to stay in during visits. Another thing which has been vehemently denied and called “misleading” by the court filings is the news published by The Mail that all of the purchases and renovations were made with taxpayers' money.
As for the letter by Markle to her father Thomas Markle, The Mail has been accused of omitting paragraphs and publishing only half of the letter to present the Duchess of Sussex in a bad light.
In addition, the court documents criticized an article stating that while Markle’s mother was in LA all by herself, the Duchess was busy throwing a $300,000 baby shower. Markle’s lawyers have stated that a fraction of what has been quoted was spent on the baby shower and the only reason Markle’s mother wasn’t there was because of her work obligations.
