Megan Fox revealed she experienced a dark period in her life after filming “Jennifer’s Body.” She also shared that considering how she is stereotyped, she found herself unable to join the #MeToo movement.
A decade has passed since Megan Fox worked on the horror-comedy movie “Jennifer’s Body.” It has become a cult movie since then but instead of rejoicing, Fox stayed out of the limelight for quite some time and now has reemerged to say that she experienced a dark period of her life.
Speaking with ET, she revealed that even before she did the movie and saw the marketing plan for the movie, she was already heavily sexualized and objectified. The movie just added to what she was feeling. "It wasn't just that movie, it was everyday of my life, all the time, with every project I worked on and every producer I worked with," she recalled. "It preceded a breaking point for me."
After the movie, she felt scared to go out and had a psychological breakdown, which led to a dark moment in her life. "I think I had a genuine psychological breakdown where I wanted just nothing to do," she shared. "I didn't want to be seen, I didn't want to have to take a photo, do a magazine, walk a carpet, I didn't want to be seen in public at all because the fear, and the belief, and the absolute certainty that I was going to be mocked, or spat at, or someone was going to yell at me, or people would stone me or savage me for just being out… so I went through a very dark moment after that."
She felt so anguished by what was happening to her that she felt the need to speak out in the past about sexualization and objectification, but she said it was not properly accepted as such statements are being accepted today. This is why she is worried about joining the #MeToo movement and announcing that she too, is a feminist.
"I feel like I was sort of out and in front of the #MeToo movement before the #MeToo movement happened, I was speaking out and saying, 'Hey, these things are happening to me and they're not OK,'" Fox explained. "And everyone was like, 'Oh well, f**k you. We don't care, you deserve it.' Because everybody talked about how you looked or how you dressed or the jokes you made."
The actress added that this is precisely what is holding her back from working with and supporting feminists. "Even though I consider myself a feminist, I feel like feminists don't want me to be a part of their group," Fox said. "What is supporting other females if there is only certain ones of us we support? If I have to be an academic or have to be non-threatening to you in some way? Why can't I be a part of the group as well?"
In another interview, Fox recounted her experience on the “Jennifer’s Body” set, where she was spied on by a photographer while only wearing a nude underwear and some nipple tapes. She shared that she felt really violated.
