America's favorite dance competition has returned but with a whole lot of Latin spice. "Dancing with the Stars" premiered its 32nd season live through Disney plus on Tuesday night, introducing a dazzling array of new stars, including three talented Latino contestants.
Dancing with the stars was established in 2004, with judges Carrie Ann Inaba, the late Len Goodman, and Bruno Tonioli. Throughout the years Hollywood's biggest entertainers, professionals, and athletes took part in the project to showcase their best dancing skills. But the year 2023 is all about Latino representation.
This season's cast shine with the different backgrounds, each with their own captivating stories. Get to know the Latino stars on season 32 of Dancing with the Stars:
Lele Pons
The singer was born in Caracas, Venezuela. She rose to fame at the age of 16 when she went viral on Vine for making comedic videos. Her relatable content resonated with millions around the globe which led to her gaining a huge following. Later on in her career, she made her way into the entertainment industry by becoming an actress and singer. Throughout her musical career, she accomplished many goals. She received a certified 10x diamond in Mexico for her song "Celoso" and was nominated for the music video at Premio Lo Nuestro, she went on to take over the latin music genres with hit singles like "Se te Nota" featuring Puerto Rican artist, Guaynaa –Lele's husband.
Brandon Armstrong – Pons's dance partner – and Lele swept the audience away on the first night with a confidently-done tango. Judge Derek Hough stated, "It was sharp, it was strong, it was powerful, it had attack. I love that dance. It was fantastic. But I agree with Bruno, watch your turns." This duo totaled up a score of 19 putting them in third place, this triumph allowed them to make it past their first week.
Mauricio Umansky
This well-known real estate agent was born in Mexico. He is recognized for his Netflix series, Buying Beverly Hills, where it takes the viewers on the journey of how his real estate agency completes high-end sales. In 2023, he was part of a divorce scandal with his former wife, Kyle Richards.
Emma Slater - Umansky's dance partner – and Mauricio jived their way into the show's premiere. After the performance, Inaba remarked, " I feel you might be better suited for a salsa." These dance partners received an overall score of 15, leaving them in the scary position of the bottom two but with the love of his family – estranged wife, Richards was present and rooting on Umansky – and fans he was able to stay an extra week.
Xóchitl Gómez
The Latina marvel superhero was born in Los Angeles, California but is of Mexican descent. Gomez blew up in Hollywood with the role of America Chavez in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Doctor Strange in the multiverse of Madness starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen in 2022. She's reached major milestones by becoming the first major queer Latina superhero in the MCU and now by becoming the youngest Dancing with the Stars contestant this season at only 17 years.
Val Chmerkovskiy – Gómez's dance partner – and Xochitl were the guineapigs of the night as they were the first to cha cha the night away. Although there were a few critiques from the judges, Tonioli expressed "Your potential is enormous!" These two tallied up a score of 18 by the judges but with the help of the fans they were able to succeed to the next round.
Pons, Umansky, and Gómez are just a few of the latinos who have been a part of this show. They have the bar set high as a result of Latina gymnast, Laurie Hernández - of Puerto Rican descent- who won the mirrorball trophy –Now renamed to the Len Goodman Mirroball trophy – along with her former dance partner, Chmerkovskiy, back in 2016 on season 23 of DWTS. Prior to Hernandez's accomplishment, actor and motivational speaker JR Martínez –of Salvadoran descent -, won back in 2011 on season 13.
These Latin contestants are accompanied by co-hosts Julianne Hough and Alfonso Ribeiro. Alongside these co-hosts you will come across Hollywood stars such as Tyson Beckford, Alyson Hannigan, Harry Jowsey, Charity Lawson , Ariana Madix, Jason Mraz , Adrian Peterson, Mira Sorvino, Jamie Lynn Spears, Barry Williams, and Matt Walsh who was sent home on the first night. Catch them all next Tuesday dancing to Latin music, a perfect night to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
