Ciudad Juarez mayor, Enrique Serrano is just not happy about the movie “Sicario,” starring Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin. The film follows three FBI agents who are assigned to the US-Mexico border area to fight the escalating war against drugs. Led by an enigmatic consultant with a questionable past (Del Toro), the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate (Blunt) to question everything that she believes in order to survive. Juarez is allegedly portrayed as an extremely violent place and therefore Serrano has called for a boycott.

“In the lawless border area,” is how the movie’s synopsis reads, and the mayor stated that if the film had plotted things out as the past tense, he wouldn’t mind it, but Juarez isn’t the same as it was a few years ago, and Serrano says he’s worked very hard to help the city overcome that image. The politician is also considering suing the producers, but Villenueve (one of the filmmakers) sustains the city remains a dangerous place; so much so, that outdoor scenes had to be shot in New Mexico for security reasons.

Despite the criticism, Variety considers “Sicario” one of the big, potential Oscar contenders to hit theatres this season.
