One of the most prestigious events in professional sports, the Masters Tournament serves as an opportunity for the best players in golf to showcase their skills at the challenging yet rewarding Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia on a yearly basis. Serving as the first major championship on the PGA Tour schedule each year as well, the Masters is also a way for the entrants to get off to a quick start in their quest for a major title. With big names including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and Angel Cabrera competing on a yearly basis – even though Woods will be absent from this year’s event following back surgery – the Masters Tournament remains a highly anticipated event because it consistently offers fans a chance to see the top players in the game.

Despite the absence of four-time Masters Champion Tiger Woods, the 2014 version of golf’s first major should not disappoint. Defending champion Adam Scott enters the field as the No. 2 ranked player in the world and while he’ll certainly be considered among the favorites to don the green jacket at tournament’s end, there are more than a few players capable of making a run at the title. Scott joins Rory McIlroy as the favorites with 10/1 odds according to golfodds.com while three-time Masters Champion Phil Mickelson earned 12/1 chances of finishing ahead of the field along with Australian Jason Day and American Matt Kuchar. The talented Dustin Johnson was tabbed with 20-1 odds as was 2012 Masters champ Bubba Watson.

In addition to the aforementioned crop of players, Brandt Snedeker, 2013 U.S. Open champion Justin Rose, 2013 FedEx Cup winner Henrik Stenson and Spaniard Sergio Garcia will all be followed closely at Augusta this week since each showed the ability to play at a high level last season, leading many to believe that this could be the time one of them captures the beloved honor. 2013 Masters runner-up Ángel Cabrera – who earned his only green jacket in 2009 – will be in the field once again as will veteran champions Jose Maria Olazabal, Ben Crenshaw and Fred Couples among others.

Hoping to claim his first green jacket and third career major championship, Northern Ireland native Rory McIlroy says he hopes to earn a Masters title before his career comes to an end, especially since the 24-year-old believes the course suits his style of play.

“I adore Augusta and The Masters,” he said. “Every time I play my practice rounds, I finish on the 18th green and I’m like ‘is that it – can’t I play some more?’. And the more you go back, the more comfortable you become. So I’d be disappointed if, at the end of my playing days, I wasn’t able to go up and have breakfast in the Champions’ Locker Room. The way I play golf, the way my game is, Augusta does set up well for me. So not to have a top-10 after five Masters isn’t good. In the last couple of years I have been in a great position going into the weekend and thrown in a bad nine holes here or there.”
