Charleston's NAACP president Dot Scott made a statement today during a press conference regarding George Zimmerman's acquittal, demanding justice for both Trayvon Martin and Marley Lion. The news conference was held in downtown Charleston where Scott discussed Zimmerman's not-guilty verdict, stating that there was no justice for the death of Trayvon Martin. He also referenced the lack of justice in the Marley Lion murder case, a white 17-year-old for South Carolina who was shot and killed by three black men in a parking lot last year.

The death of Marley Lion has only come to the nation's attention a year later through social media. A photo that has gone viral, circulating on Twitter shows both slain teens but states the media handled the cases contrastingly due to race. The viral photo claims that while Martin's case made national news and "was recognized by the president and countless celebrities," Lion's story "never made it past the local news." The text below the image states, "You tell me...what is the difference?"

Investigators in South Carolina have charged Bryan Rivers, Ryan Deleston and Julius Brown with Lion's murder. Charleston police state that the murder was a coordinated attack on Lion, therefore all three suspects were charged with murder and attempted armed robbery in addition to other charges.

According to court records filed on June 16, 2012, 17-year-old Lion pulled over to the Famous Joe's parking in West Ashley lot to sleep. According to investigators, Rivers, Deleston and Brown planned to rob Lion. When Lion sounded the vehicle alarm, police say Deleston opened fire on Lion.

Scott discussed our nation's justice system and believes that it is indeed flawed. "We support the American justice system, but past experience has taught us that the system does not always work." The emotional press conference followed demonstrators showing peaceful support for Trayvon Martin during a vigil organized by a grassroots effort.

"The Charleston branch of the NAACP joins with the National NAACP and people of good will across our nation in condemning justice denied in the murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Benjamin Martin," Scott said during the Tuesday press conference.
