Tragedy has struck at a Connecticut high school, as a 16-year-old student has been stabbed to death over a prom invitation.

Maren Sánchez, 16, was pushed down a flight of stairs and stabbed near the stairwell inside the hallway of Jonathan Law High School in Milford, Connecticut. The student, who was a junior at the school, was choked and stabbed in the neck at 7:14 a.m. ET and was taken to Bridgeport Hospital. She was pronounced dead thirty minutes later.

In a press conference, authorities revealed that both teachers and emergency responders tried to save her life. The school was placed under lockdown after the attack and students were sent home after the gruesome stabbing. Authorities have said the stabbing was an isolated case and no other students were hurt.

While the Milford authorities have not disclosed a motive of the attacker, who was also a student at the high school, local media outlets are reporting that the attacker stabbed Sánchez, who has a boyfriend, for refusing to go to from with him later in the evening. The 16-year-old suspect, whose name is being withheld since he is a minor, is currently in custody.

"We'll get the bottom of it, or how it happened or why it happened," said Milford police chief Keith Mello.

Fox News reports that the victim and suspect are friends on Facebook and a student at the school stated that they were friendly. Sánchez was an honor student, the swim team manager, and active in community service.
