Florida Senator Marco Rubio is demanding answers from Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz after a report alleged that he had a "secret fling" with the daughter of a top Chinese official while teaching in the country in 1989.
The Daily Mail reported on Monday a claim by Jenna Wang, who said the Minnesota governor "showered her with gifts and seduced her at his poky staff accommodation at No.1 High School in Foshan, Guangdong Province."
Reacting to the report, Rubio said on X that if "you aspire to be Vice-President of the United States, voters deserve to know everything about any and every link you have to the CCP."
The report adds that Walz and Wang could "not risk holding hands or showing affection in public because Wang's dad was a high-ranking figure in the Chinese Communist Party who could disown her for fraternizing with a westerner."
However, they kept seeing each other "behind closed doors," leading Wang to "dream about marriage and a new life in the United States." "We were deeply in love and I wanted to marry him and start a family. When it didn't happen, I felt very unhappy and sad. Tim's behavior was very selfish," Wang told the outlet.
She went on to detail how she believed they would start a new life in the U.S., even resigning from her job and sending Walz a passport photo and personal information. However, the relationship reportedly began to sour as a result of "clumsy, romantic gestures in public" from Walz. They then collided after Walz said she was more interested in the passport than the relationship, eventually leading to a breakup.
Walz is already under fire from Republicans over his alleged ties to China, with the House Oversight Committee seeking information on the matter from both the FBI and the DHS. Committee Chair James Comer has claimed Walz's ties with the Chinese government are "myriad and substantial."
"In 1993, Mr. Walz organized a trip to the PRC for his Alliance High School students; the costs for the trip were paid in part by the Chinese government," he recalled when asking the FBI for information.
He also said that Walz traveled to China about "30 times," that during his time in Congress, he served as a fellow at the Macau Polytechnic University and that in 2019 he headlined the 27th National Convention for the U.S. China Peoples Friendship Association in Minnesota.
"The Committee is concerned that Mr. Walz's involvement with Chinese entities and officials may have allowed the CCP to influence his decision-making as a congressman and governor and potentially would allow the CCP to influence the White House should Mr. Walz be elected vice president." the document adds.
As for the DHS claims to have learned through a whistleblower about a "non-classified" group chat comprising DHS personnel that "contains information about Governor Walz that is relevant to the Committee's investigation."
In fact, on Tuesday the committee released a portion of the communications, claiming they show officials "discussing the CCP's targeting of Governor Walz on the same day VP Kamala Harris picked him to be her running mate.
"Walt's got the Vp. You all have no idea how this feeds into what prc has been doing here with him and local gov. It's seriously a line of the intel. Target someone who is perceived they can get to DC," the screenshot shows.
