Currently sitting seventh in the competitive Barclays Premier League, Manchester United has struggled to find consistency under the direction of first-year coach David Moyes. Earning 41 points through 25 matches this season, the Red Devils have not been able to reach the form that saw them claim another English title last season, with injuries and team cohesiveness major reasons for the drop in the standings. Though Moyes and Old Trafford higher-ups were able to acquire former Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata during the recent winter transfer period, multiple sources indicate that the club is expecting to lose a significant level of experience heading into the 2014-2015 campaign.
While Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Ryan Giggs – the most decorated player in Man U history – will see their current contracts expire at the conclusion of this season, captain Nemanja Vidic is also expected to leave the English giants after announcing that his eighth season at Old Trafford will be his last. The Yugoslavia native joined Manchester United in 2006 after two seasons with Russian Premier League affiliate Spartak Moscow. Indicating that his time with United has been nothing short of wonderful, the 32-year-old centre-back simply said that it is time for him to move on.
“It's the last year of my contract and I have had eight wonderful years here,” Vidic said. “My time at this great club will always rank as the best years of my career. I never could have imagined winning 15 trophies and I will certainly never forget that fantastic night in Moscow, memories that will live with me and the fans forever. However, I have decided that I will move on at the end of this season. I want to challenge myself again and try to make the best of myself in the coming years.”
If Giggs, Evra and Ferdinand – who has been linked to a move to Major League Soccer – depart alongside the current Man U captain, David Moyes and company will lose a major chunk of experience while not receiving transfer fees in return. Vidic has appeared in nearly 300 games since joining the Red Devils in 2006, with the aforementioned quartet appearing in over 2,000 games in United colors.
