Breaking news out of Manchester over the weekend came courtesy of Old Trafford’s newest star, Angel Di Maria. As his former teammate, Cristiano Ronaldo, became the fastest ever player in La Liga history to score twenty goals (11 appearances), Di Maria told the media that it was Ronaldo who convinced him to go to Manchester United.
Di Maria transferred to Old Trafford in August for British record $94 million dollars. At the time, it was a big news story as Ronaldo vocally protested against the move. According to reports, he asked Madrid President, Florentino Perez, not to transfer Di Maria. Di Maria led all of La Liga in assists in 2013, most of those going to Ronaldo.
Now however, Di Maria is telling reporters that it was Ronaldo himself who told him to go to Manchester United.
“He told me it was a massive club and that I would be very happy here and it would be good for me,” Di Maria told Inside United, Old Trafford’s official magazine. “At that time, we didn’t know for sure that I was coming or not, so we didn’t go into great detail, but what he did say helped me greatly to make my decision.”
Di Maria has been on fire since putting on the Red Devils jersey, as he scored three goals in the team’s first six games. Since then, he has struggled and hasn’t scored in the team’s last four matches. A lot of that is the fact that United is playing without Colombian striker, Radamel Falcao. Regardless, Di Maria is happy to be playing with Manchester United, and despite what his teammate might have told him privately, and said to the media publicly, he is happy he made the move.
“It was a very big moment in my career. Leaving a club like Real and coming to as big a club as Manchester United makes you grow as a player and helps you progress in your career. It was a very important moment and I’m really happy here. Let’s hope things go well for me so I can be here for many years.”
