A man who stabbed his girlfriend to death and scribbled the words "it was me" on her leg in red nail polish has been sentenced to life in prison.
41-year-old Daniel Smith, of Oldham, England attacked and murdered his 29-year-old girlfriend, Imogen Bohajczuk, during an argument on February 18, The Sun reported.
The two had been in a relationship for several months which was reportedly characterized by alcohol abuse and violence.
After the murder, Smith moved Bohajczuk's body to the bedroom and put her on the bed. He then daubed the words: "It was me" on her leg with red nail polish.
Leaving Bohajczuk’s body, Smith reportedly went on a spending spree using her bank card 38 times to buy booze.
Bohajczuk's body was discovered two weeks after the killing when a housing officer made a welfare check at the home.
The mother of one was found dead with multiple stab wounds on the bed positioned next to a soft toy with her arms crossed clutching at a bottle of perfume.
Smith was arrested at a friend’s house on March 5. He pleaded guilty to murder during a sentencing hearing on July 20. Judge Patrick Field slammed a life sentence to Smith with a minimum term of 17 1/2 years.
"As I told you at the time, there is only one sentence that the law provides for the offense of murder and that is life imprisonment," Field said during the sentencing.
"It seems likely that you killed Imogen on or after 18th February."
"That was the date when she called the police and she sent messages to a former partner complaining of being assaulted by you."
"There is no evidence of her surviving beyond that date."
"It remains my task, however, to decide upon the appropriate minimum period that you will spend in jail before the Parole Board can consider whether you are safe to be released," the judge said, adding that Bohajczuk suffered a "brutal and ferocious attack."
"The fatal injuries were multiple stab wounds, at least two of which were delivered with sufficient force — severe force — to penetrate bone," Field continued.
''If you had wanted to make clear to the police what you had done, you could have gone to them and told them. This act looks like an act of callous and cruel triumphalism."
''Imogen was a young woman when she died. She was the mother of a young child."
"In killing Imogen you have deprived that child of a mother and Imogen’s parents and siblings have been deprived of a daughter and a sister. Their grief is palpable," the judge said during the sentencing.
Detective Inspector Andy Naismith said the victim’s family "are now left to pick up the pieces of their lives and to try and come to terms with the death of a daughter, sister and loving mother — nothing will ever bring them peace."
