A Californian man who donned women's clothes and allegedly assaulted a 12-year-old girl has been arrested while he was riding his bike naked near a school in Corona, a city located in Riverside County, about 47 miles southeast of Los Angeles on Wednesday, Oct. 13.
On Oct. 13, Carlos Martinez, 41, of Corona, who was dressed in woman's clothing, reportedly ran into a 12-year-old girl with his bicycle and knocked her over while she was on her way to Cesar Chavez Academy, a K-8 school at 1150 Paseo Grande. Martinez then allegedly stripped down and exposed himself to the minor girl and made "sexual references" towards her, Fox News reported.
However, the girl escaped the alleged assault by running to a nearby school bus.
Shortly after the attack, a concerned citizen flagged down a police officer and reported that a naked man was riding a bicycle near the school area. Police officers who responded to the scene reportedly found Martinez cycling naked near the local school premises.
“The perpetrator was seen without clothing riding a bicycle. As our school buses arrived, this individual rode directly in view of our students,” the school’s message to the students' parents said.
Martinez has been arrested and charged with attempted rape of a minor, assault with a deadly weapon, and was held at the Robert Presley Detention Center on a $50,000 bail, according to East Bay Times.
The Corona Police Department thanked the concerned citizen for reporting the suspect and said that the incident demonstrates the importance of the "See something, say something" campaign.
In a similar but unrelated incident, a 22-year-old man has been arrested after a sexual assault incident at Chantilly High School in September, WUSA reported.
Galata Bekele Bengessa, 22, of Fairfax, reportedly entered Chantilly High School wearing a mask, approached the underage victim, started a conversation with the girl, before he proceeded to "unlawfully" touch her. The underage victim had believed that he was another student at the school. The girl later alerted the school officials and told her mother about the alleged assault.
Following a complaint by the victim's mother regarding the attack, officers searched the area and located Bengessa on foot near Route 50 and Fairfax County Parkway. Officers took him into custody and he was later transported to a nearby hospital after he made several comments towards the police.
Bengessa was later reportedly arrested on Wednesday, Oct. 13 for the alleged assault, charged with abduction by force, sexual battery, and trespassing on school property, and was taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
