An alleged arson attempt went south when a suspect accidentally set their own pants on fire, according to Victoria Police.

The incident occurred around 2:40 a.m. on Christmas at a fast-food restaurant in Australia. Police said two individuals poured a flammable liquid at the restaurant and attempted to ignite it, The Guardian reported.

However, the liquid caught fire faster than anticipated, engulfing one suspect's clothing. CCTV footage shows the individual fleeing the scene with their pants on fire.

Desperate to extinguish the flames, the person is seen attempting to shed the burning garment while running down the street, their pants dangling around one ankle.

"The clothing of one of the alleged offenders caught fire," police confirmed in a statement. "They stripped off their burning garments as they ran back to the [car] along with the other alleged offender who had collected the [gas can]."

The car, believed to be driven by a third accomplice, was last seen heading east on Doncaster Road.

Police have released CCTV footage of the incident and are seeking two individuals who may assist with their investigation.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Manningham Crime Investigation Unit or Crime Stoppers.
