A man reportedly shot his uncle and killed him after a fight ensued between them over who gets to sleep on the couch in south Phoenix on Sunday, July 17.
The accused, Dajoun Ty Miller, 22, allegedly wanted to sleep on the couch on the night of July 17 and told his mother that he would fight his uncle Denzell Williams for the spot.
When Miller went to sleep, he noticed that his uncle had already taken his position on the couch. This led to a heated argument between the two, and as the argument escalated, Miller pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots at his uncle, killing him, AZFamily reported.
Law enforcement was immediately called to the shooting near 7th Street and Fremont, just north of Baseline Road. When the officers arrived at the residence, they found Miller outside the house. Miller had his hands up and told police that he had just shot someone inside the home.
When the officers entered the house, they found Williams lying on the couch dead, with gunshot wounds all over his body. More than a dozen 9MM casings were also found near Williams’ body and several pieces of the gun were discovered scattered throughout the house and yard.
According to the family members, Miller had been living at his mother’s house for a few months and became upset when his uncle, Williams, also moved in.
On Sunday evening, family members heard Miller and Williams fighting downstairs, followed by a series of gunshots. When the family members rushed down, they saw Miller standing over Williams, unloading multiple gunshots, KLTV 7 reported.
Miller's family members told the officers that Miller had a history of hallucinations and undiagnosed mental problems. When questioned, Miller denied having any mental health issues. However, he reportedly told investigators three different versions of what happened.
Miller first told officers that he was angry at his uncle for disrespecting him and ignoring him while he was trying to talk to him. Then, Miller told the officers that he couldn’t remember what happened until he was in the back of the patrol car. Miller then changed his story a third time and told officers that his uncle threatened to kill the family while they were sleeping.
Miller has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the incident.
