A pregnant woman was allegedly set on fire by her live-in partner. The incident occurred Monday, Aug.30, in India’s Haryana.
Police say they were alerted by the hospital about a domestic violence victim being treated there for burn injuries.
The victim, identified as Pragati, and the accused Rahul lived together in a rented house in Sonipat’s Kundli area.
According to a senior police officer, the woman is pregnant and had told the accused about the same. The victim wanted the suspect to marry her at the earliest. Police say the couple engaged in heated arguments whenever the victim put forward the idea of getting married.
On the day of the incident, the victim was asking the suspect to contact his parents and tell them about their relationship. However, he strongly disapproved of it.
The altercation quickly escalated into a physical assault during which Rahul grabbed a can of petrol from the kitchen and emptied it on the victim.
He fled the scene after setting the victim on fire.
Neighbors responded to the woman’s loud cries and immediately looked for ways to put out the fire.
They managed to enter the home and located the burning woman in the bedroom, Neighbors put out the fire and rescued the woman. She was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries,
She was later shifted to a specialized hospital in Delhi for better treatment.
No updates were available about her current health condition.
In a statement given to the police, the victim said she was pregnant with the suspect’s child.
The woman said the suspect attacked her when she told him to call his parents home for dinner.
Based on the victim’s statement, police registered a case against Rahul under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
In a similar incident, a teen allegedly trespassed into a couple’s suburban Houston home and doused them with gasoline before setting them on fire on Aug. 6.
