Echoing the popular myth that children do not need to wear masks, an unknown man harassed multiple families in Arlington, Virginia.
The man, seen riding an electric skateboard, stopped at multiple locations to tell parents that making children wear masks was child abuse. The accusation has become popular after television host Tucker Carlson told views in April that it was a form of child abuse. Police were called following the incident.
A YouTube user shared a video of a stranger shouting at a woman about putting masks on children. The incident reportedly took place on Tuesday, May 25 at the playground in Rocky Run Park. The man is seen engaging with the parent of one of the children playing in the park.
In the video of the incident, the man can be seen recording the children. He claims that he ran a very popular YouTube channel but did not say anything when the parent asked him to say his name.
He is seen shouting “child abuse, child abuse, suffocation, suffocation!” He continues to justify his stance by saying that most people are vaccinated and children did not need to wear masks when outdoors. He also claimed that children wearing masks was damaging for their mental health.
Raw Story noted that the man’s words echoed that of Carlson. Carlson had equated children wearing masks with children being beaten in Walmart. He had urged his viewers to call the police and contact child protective services when they saw children in masks.
He claimed that there was “no scientific justification” behind children being forced to wear masks. These statements were made despite the Centre of Disease Control reporting Covid-19 fatalities in children below the age of 18. Children under the age of 12 are not eligible for vaccination, so wearing a mask for children protects them from the virus.
A man who claimed to be the father of one of the children at the park told ARLnow that the police were called following the incident. The police arrived at the park, but the man had left by then. The police told parents not to engage with such people. They also informed them that filming the children was not illegal. It is unclear if the police are looking for the man.
The father claims that the same man harassed a friend and her children near the Courthouse Plaza. He said that another woman was harassed near Whole Foods Clarendon.
