Man on Quick Trip to Chick-fil-A Faces Massive Fine After Getting Busted with Expired Plate, No Insurance: 'That's One Expensive Sandwich'

A Kingston man's craving for Chick-fil-A ended with a hefty fine rather than a tasty meal when he was stopped by police using AI technology, according to a report.

The man was driving toward Chick-fil-A, when Ontario's Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) system flagged his vehicle for an expired license plate. Further investigation revealed the man was also driving without insurance, Ottawa City News reported.

The driver now faces a potential $5,000 fine upon conviction. "That's one expensive sandwich," Ontario Provincial Police quipped after the Oct. 16 incident.

Provincial police said they stopped three other drivers that afternoon with the help of the ALPR system, one of whom had a suspended license due to unpaid family support.

The ALPR system can scan up to 5,000 plates an hour and cross-reference each with a database that flags licenses which are suspended or prohibited.
