A man from Florida was arrested on Saturday, Feb. 5, after a series of events led to him stealing a car to find his own, before getting it stuck on a train rail that caused a speeding train to crash the vehicle and hurl it towards a nearby house.
Thirty-eight-year-old Bradford Weitzel was arrested for grand theft and criminal mischief after his attempt to find his own car using another’s was so poorly done that he had inadvertently damaged a couple’s home in his search for it, Law&Crime reported.
Police said that Weitzel, who might’ve been intoxicated during the ordeal, had stolen a car “in good faith” so that he would be able to find his actual vehicle around the area. However, his search for the car found him getting the stolen vehicle stuck in train tracks, according to the New York Daily News.
In this instance, Weitzel and the police said that a train was approaching just as the car stopped at the tracks. Panicking and not wishing to die, Weitzel left the car and ran moments before the train hit the car and braced for impact.
“Within seconds, the train hit the car, catapulting it into a nearby home where the homeowners were sound asleep,” a press release from authorities said. “Fortunately, they were not physically injured, although the explosive sound of a driverless car smashing into the side of their home was clearly jolting.”
After this, he vandalized a nearby fruit stand before attempting to steal a forklift.
“In the end, Weitzel said he thought it was best to flag down the responding deputies to let them know he was still looking for his car,” the Martin County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
Police officers found the event ludicrous, as highlighted by their inability to give the press release a title outside of an all-caps “NO TITLE COULD EXPLAIN THIS CASE, BUT THE DETAILS WILL…WELL, IT’S BEST TO JUST READ ON.”
More charges against Weitzel are expected in the next few days. It is not known if bail has been set for him, or if he has an attorney to represent him.
