A man killed a 16-year-old girl because she wouldn't pick up a bag of marijuana that had dropped on the floor in Burlington, Kentucky.
Officers from Boone County were called to a home in the 3000 block of Silver Brook Drive in Burlington at about 2:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3 after they received a report of a shooting. When they arrived at the residence, they found 16-year-old Scarlett Tucker dead from a gunshot wound to the head in a bedroom inside the residence, Local 12 reported.
There were multiple witnesses who remained on the scene. Detectives learned that Tucker, two 18-year-olds, a 17-year-old, and Demarkus Hedges, 18, had all gone out earlier and spent time in Cincinnati and Covington before returning to the home of an 18-year-old woman. According to the deputies, a bag of marijuana fell on the bedroom floor and Hedges demanded that Tucker pick it up. When she refused, Hedges pointed his gun at Scarlett's head and fired a shot. After shooting her, Hedges took off from the crime scene.
Meanwhile, the other three people stayed behind and cooperated with the deputies. Following the incident, Hedges has been charged with murder, tampering with evidence, and unlawful transaction with a minor, WLWT reported.
On Tuesday, Jan. 3, Hedges turned himself in to the U.S. Marshals Service in Covington. He will be held in the Boone County Detention Center on a $1 million bond.
