A man allegedly killed himself after falling into debt due to his habit of online gambling in Hanamkonda district, Telangana, India on Monday, Oct. 10.
The deceased, identified as 26-year-old P Ramakrishna Reddy of Malakpalli village, a private employee, had become addicted to online betting and gambling applications and had also taken loans from various sources including several loan apps. However, due to his addiction to online gambling, Reddy started losing huge sums of money recently and got caught in a vicious cycle of debt, the Hindu reported.
Reddy reportedly spent all his savings to play the gambling game online. However, when he started losing money, he borrowed money from his friends to play the game. However, he lost the borrowed money as well.
“I have been suffering for four months. I spent all my savings and even borrowed money from others to play the games,” said Reddy.
Upset over his inability to repay debts, Reddy reportedly fell into depression. Depressed over his helpless condition, Reddy decided to end his life, allegedly consumed pesticide and committed suicide in Malakpalli village in the Dharmasagar Mandal of Hanamkonda district on Monday, Oct. 10 morning, the Siasat Daily reported.
Before committing suicide, Reddy made a selfie video explaining the reasons for taking the extreme step. He said in the selfie video that he has no other option but to end his life as he had already suffered a loss of about $7,290 (600000 Indian Rupees) by playing online gambling games.
Reddy stated that he had deleted all the games from his mobile phone and had stopped betting online. However, when the organizers of online games sent him a link on WhatsApp recently, he was tempted again to play online games.
After consuming pesticides and attempting suicide, Reddy sent the selfie video to his relatives and friends. Seeing the video, his friends and relatives rushed to the scene for help. They immediately shifted him to MGM Hospital in Warangal for treatment. However, Reddy died while undergoing treatment at the hospital a couple of hours later.
Following the incident, the Dharmasagar police registered a case and initiated a detailed investigation into the suicide.
