A man allegedly killed his girlfriend’s infant while he was trying to get her to sleep so that he could play video games without any interference in Fairbanks, Alaska.
The accused, identified as 31-year-old Zackry Johnson, the boyfriend of the baby’s mother, was reportedly living with his girlfriend and her children at their house near 1600 Central Avenue. Johnson was reportedly looking after his girlfriend's children while his girlfriend was away at work on Nov. 3, Lexington Herald Leader reported.
When the baby’s mother arrived home in the evening, Johnson told her that the baby was sleeping. However, when she went to check on the baby the next day, she found that the baby had died. The mother immediately dialed 911 and informed the officers that her child had died.
When Fairbanks police and Fairbanks Fire Department medics responded to the scene, they said they found the baby deceased at the residence. The child reportedly had “multiple injuries to her body, consistent with being assaulted.”
“The child was observed to have multiple injuries to her body, consistent with being assaulted,” a department press release stated.
After the officers spoke with the baby’s mother, Johnson was taken to the police department for questioning. When questioned by the investigating officers, Johnson initially told the police that the baby’s injuries were the result of the baby “‘play fighting’ with her 6-year-old sister.”
However, when the officers confronted him saying that the injuries observed on the child were inconsistent with injuries that would be caused by two young siblings rough-housing, Johnson provided different accounts of how the child received the injuries, Alaska's News Source reported.
However, Johnson eventually acknowledged that he caused multiple injuries and used too much force on the 1-year-old while he was trying to get her to nap. He told the officers that he was trying to get the baby to sleep so that he could play video games without any interference.
"He demonstrated several of the actions he used on the child and further acknowledged his actions likely led to the death of the girl,” police said.
Following his confession, Johnson was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Johnson was being held at Fairbanks Correctional Center on $4 million cash bail.
