An Indian man has been accused of bludgeoning his nephew to death with an iron rod after discovering his wife's illicit affair with the younger man in Ludhiana, Punjab, India.
The accused, identified as Sarwan Kumar, 45, was reportedly arrested for killing his nephew Sapan Kumar Shah, 30, with a blunt object at their house in Raj Enclave on Jagirpur Road, Ludhiana, on Saturday night, Aug. 14, Hindustan Times reported.
Kumar reportedly discovered his wife’s illicit relationship with his nephew in March and had been planning to murder his nephew since.
On Sunday morning, Aug. 15, a laborer named Sidhu Kumar reportedly visited Shah's house to check on him as he was not answering his phone calls. When Sidhu entered the home, however, he found Shah lying dead on his bed and immediately alerted the police.
Shah, who hailed from Madhepura, Bihar, was a labor contractor and also ran a printing unit on the ground floor of the house. He used to sleep in the printing unit, while his maternal uncle Kumar lived on the first floor of the building with his wife and children.
When Kumar was interrogated by the police, he initially claimed that an intruder may have killed his nephew. However, police officers started suspecting Kumar as he kept changing his statements.
After he was confronted by the authorities, Kumar confessed to the murder and told the police that he bludgeoned Shah to death with an iron rod while the younger man was asleep. The rod used to commit the murder was reportedly recovered from the house.
Kumar previously served two years in jail in a drug peddling case and was released on bail in March this year. He reportedly overheard a conversation between his wife and Shah and found out about their affair.
Shah left for Bihar in April to get married and returned to the city on July 27. Since his return to the city, Kumar had been looking for an appropriate time to execute the murder. He told the officers that he had planned to throw Shah’s body in a canal, but dropped the idea as he was not able to drag the heavy remains.
Shah's body was handed over to his wife and family members after they arrived from Bihar on Monday, Aug. 16.
Kumar is facing a murder case under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and will be produced in court on Tuesday, Aug. 17.
