A man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for beating and stomping his wife and throwing glass bottles at her in a brutal, caught-on-camera attack at a smoke shop in Suffolk County, Long Island.
The accused, identified as 43-year-old Almalik Keller, a Wyandanch resident, has been found guilty of first-degree assault and was sentenced to 25 years behind bars on Monday, Aug. 22, after he reportedly punched, kicked, and threw glass bottles at his spouse’s head, before proceeding to slam a car door on her leg outside a smoke shop in Wyandanch on Sept. 17, 2021, New York Post reported.
The entire assault was captured on the store's CCTV surveillance cameras. In the footage obtained by the authorities, Keller can be seen brutally assaulting his wife and throwing glass bottles and cans at her head. When bystanders who witnessed the attack helped the woman into the rear driver’s side of her vehicle, Keller, who was in the driver’s seat, got out of the vehicle and slammed the door on her leg. He can then be seen driving away with her in the car.
The victim reportedly suffered a broken leg, a black eye, and two lacerations on her scalp in the attack. In addition to these injuries, she also had to undergo two surgeries to install two permanent steel plates on both sides of her left leg, Nassau Daily Voice reported.
Following the incident, officers from the Suffolk County Police traced and located Keller the same day. When the authorities located Keller, his wife was reportedly found in the back seat of his car covered in blood and screaming.
Keller reportedly fought with police officers and tried to run away on foot. However, he was eventually subdued with a taser and arrested.
“I hope today’s sentencing gives the victim a sense of closure and security in knowing that the defendant can no longer cause harm to her or anyone else.” District Attorney Raymond Tierney said.
In addition to first-degree assault, Keller also received concurrent sentences for second-degree assault, aggravated criminal contempt, and resisting arrest.
Keller was also sentenced to 20 years post-release supervision after spending 25 years in prison and has been ordered to stay away from the victim.
