Man Bashes Mother To Death With A Dumbbell After She Asked Him Not To Work Out At Night

A 25-year-old fitness buff has been accused of brutally bashing his mother to death with a dumbbell after she told him not to work out at night in Hyderabad, India on Monday, Jan. 24

The accused, identified as 25-year-old Sudheer Kumar, a college graduate who reportedly has been suffering from mental health issues, allegedly picked up a dumbbell and smashed his mother Konda Papamma’s head in with it out of anger after she advised him not to work out at night. When his sister tried to intervene and stop the assault, he injured his sister as well, the Times Of India reported.

Papamma, a widow, who used to work as a laborer, had been living in Ramkote in Hyderabad along with her daughter, Suchitra, and the suspect, Kumar. After completing his college education, Kumar reportedly worked as a driver for a short period of time. However, he is currently unemployed due to his mental health issues.

“Papamma, a widow, used to work as a laborer. Kumar completed graduation and worked as a driver for a while. Currently, he is unemployed due to mental health issues,” P Devender, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of Sultan Bazar, said.

On Monday, Jan. 24, at around 2.30 a.m., Papamma noticed that Kumar was working out in the house and told him to sleep. Kumar, who reportedly got enraged after hearing this, picked up a dumbbell and attacked Papamma, eventually killing her using the weights he had in his hand. The victim, who suffered severe injuries from the attack, died on the spot, India Today reported.

When Kumar’s sister, Suchitra, attempted to intervene in the attack to save her mother, Kumar hit her with the dumbbell too and pushed her away. Neighbors, who rushed to the house after hearing the screams for help, quickly alerted the authorities regarding the violent domestic disturbance. Police immediately rushed to the spot to subdue the suspect and deescalate the situation.

The matriarch Papamma's remains have been transported to Osmania General Hospital for a postmortem examination. Suchitra, who sustained a head injury in the attack, was admitted to the same hospital for treatment. She is currently out of danger, in a stable condition.

Neighbors managed to nab Kumar and tried to keep him under control while awaiting the police. However, he also reportedly assaulted and bit some of the concerned villagers. Officers who rushed to the scene apprehended Kumar and transported him to the local Institute of Mental Health. A case has been registered against him under Sections 302 and 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
