Netflix’s “Making A Murderer” has been lauded as the most watched documentary on Netflix. It has gained a lot of support and attention from viewers all around the globe.

The documentary put to light the deplorable situation that the accused Steven Avery was in, causing widespread speculation about the facts of the case. After the Wisconsin court denied the convicted Avery a new trial, Avery’s lawyer, Kathleen Zellner, believes that there’s still a chance for her client to go free.

Avery’s party argued a while back that deceased victim Teresa Halbach’s remains were mishandled. The bones are a central point in Zellner’s call for a new trial as this might possibly point to the authorities’ disbelief of Avery’s guilt.

Avery and Zellner believe that testing the remains may be their way out of the mess. The bones, however, are no longer in the possession of the authorities, which arguably could be a possible violation of Avery’s rights.

The Wisconsin court trashed their request, denying any relevance of their argument. Wisconsin Judge Angela Sutkiewicz’s decision is now under review by the higher court, placing some hope on a new trial.

Sutkiewicz’s involvement has brought uproar from Avery’s supporters, with numerous calls for the judge to be removed from the case. A petition to remove her has been made on the ground that her previous hearing of Avery’s case is a serious conflict of interest as it has colored her image of Avery as a criminal.

Despite the setbacks, Zellner remains positive of the outcome of the case. “We are thrilled to be returning to the appellate court after all of this time!” she posted on Twitter earlier this month.

Zellner is positive that the bones alone will be enough to bring Avery a new trial, but failing that, she adds that they have more to put forward to sway the decision: “Numerous Brady violations in which the State withheld/concealed evidence from the defense, ineffective assistance of trial counsel for failing to hire experts and doing an inadequate investigation of third party suspects like Bobby Dassey, and new scientific evidence showing that the State's theories at trial are demonstrably false,” Zellner revealed.
