Several top National Security Council staffers have been fired on Thursday following a visit by MAGA firebrand and conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer to the White House, Axios reported.
The outlet detailed that Loomer pressed President Donald Trump to fire specific staffers, who she labeled as "neocons," a term used to refer to people who hold hawkish foreign policy views associated with the Bush administration.
An official quoted by Axios described the development as a "bloodbath" and said top officials, including senior directors, are being fired. Possibly as many as 10 people have been reached by the decision.
The New York Times also reported on the White House visit, adding that Loomer said those who should be fired were not being loyal to him. She reportedly showed him troves of opposition research that attacked the character and loyalty of the officials.
All happened in front of embattled national security adviser Mike Waltz, facing a crisis of his own over the use of the Signal messaging app to discuss highly sensitive matters, as well as the inadvertent addition of a journalist in a group about upcoming attacks against Yemen's Houthis.
One of those targeted by Loomer was Alex Wong, the deputy national security adviser. Even though he seems to be well-regarded by Trump, she questioned his loyalty because his wife worked at the Justice Department as a lawyer during the Biden and Obama administrations.
Loomer suggested that he was the one who added The Atlantic Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg to the Signal group chat, a mishap that catalyzed last week's crisis, claiming that it was done "on purpose as part of a foreign opp to embarrass the Trump administration on behalf of China."
