Conservatives are lashing out against the Philadelphia Eagles in a delayed response to a weeks-old report that the Super Bowl 59 winners might decline an invitation to visit the White House.
An anonymous source said that discussions about a potential White House invitation elicited a "massive no" from the Eagles, according to a February 6 article in the US Sun.
A current Eagles player anonymously told reporters "pretty much everyone" on the team agreed. "We won't back down from our values of respect, integrity, and equality."
The hypothetical refusal to attend garnered conservative outrage over the weekend, with Megyn Kelly joining in on X. "GO F YOURSELVES EAGLES," Kelly wrote Sunday, agreeing with another post that said rooting for their team in the Super Bowl had been a waste of time. "My husband is a fan so I got onboard but F this BS," Kelly stated.
A White House source has since stated that no invitation has even been extended yet, making the controversy premature. Despite this, MAGA supporters continue fuming online, calling the Eagles "divisive" and "unpatriotic."
"That is a really low class move," one user wrote, with another saying "I will never root for the Eagles again."
Some regretted purchasing merchandise supporting the team. "I wish I could return all the Super Bowl gear I bought my boys," a reply read. "We watched and cheered and cried, and now I feel sick to my stomach."
Some championship-winning Eagles players refused a White House visit in 2018, the last time the team won the Super Bowl. The refusal came amid President Donald Trump's criticism of players who took a knee during the national anthem to protest racial injustice. In response, Trump rescinded the entire team's invitation.
On Monday, Kelly added an update below her original condemnation of the team, clarifying the date of the original report, and cautioning that it "Could be (hopefully?) fake news!"
It remains unclear if the Philadelphia Eagles would reject an invite this year, should they receive one. Still, some fans defended the team, arguing that Trump must first "give respect before he can get it."
