“Mad Men,” the hit AMC series, which the network and creators had said all along would be ending in 2014, will now split its final season, with seven episodes in the spring of 2014 and another seven in the spring of 2015. This model worked so well for AMC’s “Breaking Bad,” splitting the fifth and final season in summer 2012 and 2013, that the network has decided to proceed the same way for its other hit drama series. “The Walking Dead” has employed a similar, but slightly less frustrating structure, airing one half of the season in the fall, and the other a few months later in the spring.
“This approach has worked well for many programs across multiple networks, and, most recently for us with ‘Breaking Bad’ which attracted nearly double the number of viewers to its second half premiere than had watched any previous episode,” AMC president Charlie Collier said in a statement. “We are determined to bring ‘Mad Men’ a similar showcase. In an era where high-end content is savored and analyzed, and catch-up time is used well to drive back to live events, we believe this is the best way to release the now 14 episodes than remain of this iconic series."
“Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner says the scheduling structure will work well for the final-season story. "We plan to take advantage of this chance to have a more elaborate story told in two parts, which can resonate a little bit longer in the minds of our audience. The writers, cast and other artists welcome this unique manner of ending this unique experience."
This new change, although frustrating for fans, means they will get an extra episode of the Emmy-winning drama, since all previous "Mad Men" seasons have run 13 episodes. The first half of the final "Mad Men" season, currently being called "The Beginning," will air in the spring of 2014. "The End of an Era," will follow in spring of 2015.
